What is Low Carbon?
One of the main reasons the amount of greenhouse gases, most of which is dioxide, has been increasing is the large consumption of fossil energy that also happens to be one of the inducements of global climate change. The Low Carbon advocates energy saving, consumables reduction as well as the development and utilization of clean energy, so that the emission of greenhouse gases could be reduced. The policy to conserve energy and reduce emission proposed by the Chinese Government constitutes the core of the Low Carbon concept.
Why to promote Low Carbon?
The contemporary world is at the most critical point of earth's history. The frequency of extreme climate events has been accelerated by the aggravation of global climate change, and the variety of species has declined severely. Icebergs melt and sea level rises. Economic and social development is now being greatly threatened.
With these problems at hand, we human beings have to realize that, in a multiculturalized world with various forms of life, it is only through unity that we will be able to move on. By sharing the responsibility of emission reduction and becoming a proponent of low carbon life style, our goal to create a long lasting globalized society, which respects the ground work of nature, could be achieved.
In hope of contributing to the actions taken around the world in response to the global climate change, the Low Carbon Campaign aims to promote the citizens' awareness of energy saving and emission reduction, as well as their intentions to make some small, easy but effective adjustments to their life styles or customs of consuming so that the release of greenhouse gases could be lowered.
Who initiated the ?
In face of the severe situation of global warming, Information Office of Chongqing Municipality, together with British Consulate in Chongqing, initiated this campaign. After a friendly consultation between the CQnews and the British Consulate in Chongqing, which was coordinated by the Department of Internet of Information Office of Chongqing Municipality, we came to an agreement. The British Consulate in Chongqing sponsors the CQnews to create a special website, in a large scale, about energy saving and emission reduction and the CQnews is responsible for the construction, maintenance and popularization work of this website.
What's the goal of this campaign?
To show how China and Britain take their responsibility to conserve energy, reduce emission and react to climate change as well as their distinguished international images. To share policies, experience and technology. To boost cooperation concerning energy conservation and emission reduction.
Through this website, we also hope, by spreading a low carbon life concept and style and improving people's perception of global warming, energy saving and emission reducing, we may take a more active role in the practice of low carbon life.
How is the Low Carbon Campaign Progressing?
Phase III corporation on the Low Carbon Campaign Webpage is from 1st April 2009 to 31st March 2010.
Since the launching of Low Carbon Webpage on 28th November 2007, a series of activities had been carried out, e.g. the Golden Idea Competition, the Low Carbon Advertisement Campaign, and the Low Carbon Legislation Seminar, which contributed to the work of raising public awareness on low carbon and sustainable development. Over 2,000 netizens from 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions presented more than 1,100 works to the first two campaigns.
The focus of Phase III co-operation will be to evoke business’s enthusiasm and encourage them to explore business opportunities in low carbon.
